Pure tone audiometry
Pure tone audiometry (PTA) and speech audiometry are the most basic for every audiological evaluation. PTA helps in determining the type and degree of hearing loss by measuring air conduction and bone conduction thresholds. Speech audiometry helps in determining speech reception thresholds (SRT) and speech discrimination score (SDS). Pure tone audiometry plays an important role in hearing aid fitting in individuals with hearing loss.
Free field audiometry is test of pure tone audiometry which helps in determining the hearing in infants and children.
Middle ear analysis
Immittance audiometry or middle ear analysis assists in the diagnosis of middle ear pathology, eustachian tube functioning and cochlear and retro-cochlear pathology through tympanograms, reflexometry, reflex decay test and reflex latency (real time) studies.
In other words it helps in determining the condition of the tympanic membrane or determining presence of fluid in the middle ear or presence of any disorders in the middle ear bones. Along with its ability to detect middle ear conditions it also assists in testing the inner ear function and the auditory nerve function.
Brainstem evoked response audiometry
Brainstem evoked response audiometry is a non invasive technique to determine the presence of hearing loss in children and adults. In BERA an individual does not require to respond to a sound but the test is automated and gives exact hearing thresholds.
It also helps in testing the inner ear and auditory nerve function.
Oto acoustic emissions
Oto acoustic emissions are generated from the cochlea (inner ear) and is an objective measure fo testing inner ear function. It also plays an important role in testing hearing evenin one day old infants and children. Its helps in early identification of hearing loss in high risk babies.
It helps in testing the hair cells in the cochlea for damages from noise exposure, ototoxicity and injury.
